How did the Free Participation Concert begin?

The unique idea of Free Participation Concerts was brought up by Mr. Jun Sugiyama, a tuba player of Ueno no Mori Brass, and it was held for the first time in Yokohama in 1997. The first concert was a big success with 100 amateur players gathering independently and working hard together to realize the concert. Through this experience participants gained tremendous feelings of achievement and inspired each other. Since then the Free Participation Concert has been held in Yokohama every year and participants now has reached total of 600. With an increase of popularity of this concert, a national scale "Free Participation Concert 2002" launched last year to involve more people form all over Japan. The original Free Participation Concert is now called "Original Free Participation Concert "
