How to Check the firmware level on the Yamaha Recorder:

Most mastering software will allow you to pull off the firmware level of the Yamaha Recorder. Just do a "Get Info" on the Yamaha CD-Recorder. Also, software such as "SCSI Probe" & "HDT Prober" will also pull off this information from our drive.

LIST OF KNOWN BUGS WITH YAMAHA RECORDERS ON THE MAC

CRW8424S/CRW8424SX:

Problem/Bug The system does not start up properly or the unit is not recognized when CRW8424 is connected to embedded SCSI interface (DB 25-pin or HDI 30-pin) on the older models of Macintosh.
Solution:  Upgrade firmware on Yamaha recorder to version 1.0j or later.

CRW6416S/CRW6416SX:

Problem/Bug:   Intermittent hang ups during read or write operations.
Solution:  Upgrade firmware on Yamaha recorder to version 1.0c or later.
Problem/Bug:   When writing to CD-RW media with Toast Mastering software, the  Toast software allows you to select 6x write speed, even though the media only supports 4x or 2x writes. The actual write speed defaults to the maximum write speed capability of the CD-RW media.
Solution:  No solution at this time. Just be aware of your actual write speed.
Problem/Bug:  Upgraded the firmware on the Yamaha CRW6416 unit to version 1.0c, and a soon as the lights on the drive stopped flashing, the Yamaha upgrade utility was hung-up. I had to power off my system and reboot to recover my system.
Solution:  This only occurs with the G3 systems. It will not damage your system or recorder in any way, and the flashrom upgrade does complete successfully. Until we are able to resolve this issue in our program, you will need to do a "Force Quit" to close our upgrade utility, or reboot your system.
Problem/Bug:  Every time I attempt to write at 2x speed to CDR media, the write speed reverts to 1x, even though I selected 2x write speed. Why?
Solution:  This is not a bug. The Yamaha CRW6416 only supports 1x, 4x, and  6x write speeds, as our specifications for the drive state. Many users wish to use the 2x write speeds to improve the quality of their audio writes. Yamaha has always maintained that our 4x write speed is a better quality write than our 2x write speed, unlike some other model recorders. This is based on Yamaha's test with Yamaha recommended brand of media.

CRW4416S/CRW4416SX:

Problem/Bug: Possible Conflicts with the New Macintosh G3 Systems:
With the new Mac G3's, Adaptec's AHA-2940UW PowerDomain/AHA-2930 PowerDomain/ or AHA-2906 PowerDomain SCSI Cards and the Yamaha CRW4416 recorder. The
system does not get to the Happy Mac screen when the Yamaha  drive is turned on. Or the Yamaha CRW4416 is not seen by your Toast  Mastering Software.
Solution: This bug was fixed with firmware version 1.0g for the Yamaha CRW4416 recorder.   No other Yamaha Recorder has this issue.   To resolve this, you will need to update the firmware on the CRW4416 to 1.0g or later versions. Also, be  sure to load the drivers for your Adaptec SCSI Controllers, before you  attempt to use the Yamaha Recorder.    With the Adaptec AHA-2906 SCSI  Controller, you may need to use Adaptec's Mounter Utility to get our  drive to mount a CD that is inserted.

Creating a BOOTABLE CD on the MAC

Correct Procedure to make the 8.5 boot CD

1) Using Toast 3.6.5 or later, mount the image

2) Select MAC Volume and choose MAC OS 8.5

3) The only box that you should mark an Xin,  is in "BOOTABLE"

4) Go to the "File Menu" and select "Save as Disc Image"

5) You now will have a new Toast Image file. (DO NOT MOUNT THIS IMAGE FILE!)

6) Burn this newly created image file to CD, by double clicking the image, and then select "Write CD".

7) You will now have a "C" Bootable Mac OS 8.5 Retail CD

Note: "C" Bootable means that at startup, when the CD is loaded, you must "Hold Down the "C" key upon boot-up, and your computer will boot from the CD you created.

Basic Installation Information about Yamaha CD Recorders

The Yamaha CDR100 , CDR102, CDR200, CDR400, CRW2260, CRW4260, CRW4416S, CRW6416S, CRW8424S, CRW8824S CD Recorder's are all SCSI devices. The Macintosh environment has a built in SCSI bus, so there are no SCSI Controller Cards that you need to purchase to get the units to work under the Macintosh environment (Unless you have a new G3 System, which does require an ADD-ON SCSI Controller, as mentioned above). Just plug the Yamaha unit in the SCSI Chain and load the Pre-Mastering Software. If the reader driver is not supplied by the Pre-Mastering Software, you can load additional driver software from FWB or CharisMac to use the drive as a reader.
