Fiest Lesson

  1. Say, 'Emmmmm...' Take a relaxed and deep breath. With the lips in the 'Emmm...' position blow steady air through the center of your mouth. The mouth corners should be slightly firm against the teeth, not stretched back. Project the air aggressively out as if blowing out birthday candles. Sustain the 'blowing-out' procedure for as long as possible.

  2. Place the mouthpiece on your lips in a comfortable center position with approximately 50% of the rim on the top lip and 50% on the bottom lip. With moist lips, close together, using the 'Emmm...' position blow air forcefully through your lips and the mouthpiece. A sound should occur. If the lips are too far apart no sound will happen. Be careful not to use excessive pressure against the lips.

  3. Place the mouthpiece gently in the trumpet and play using the same procedure as in #2 until you create a sound. Remain as relaxed as possible. Breath deeply and blow firmly and steadily through the lips, mouthpiece and trumpet. If no sound happens bring the lips closer together and use more air and air speed.

Producing a clear and consistent tone, as well as keeping the pitch steady and constant, should be your primary goals as you start playing.
