The mouthpiece is the most important element of the trumpet. It is where the sound is first generated. Trumpet mouthpieces come in a wide range of sizes to accommodate different shapes of teeth and lips. Different sizes can also facilitate playing; for example a small shallow mouthpiece can make the high register easier to play, while a wide deep mouthpiece can help give a bigger, deeper tone.
Early trumpets used the lips alone to change pitch and could play only the limited notes of the natural harmonic scale. Valves have been added to the modern trumpet enabling performers to every note of the full chromatic scale. The 1st valve lowers the pitch a step, the 2nd lowers it a 1/2 step and the 3rd lowers it by 1-1/2 steps.
The bell has a big effect on the overall tone of the trumpet. More important then the diameter of the rim is the size and shape of the taper as it flares out. Yamaha trumpet bells offer an ideal balance between easy playability, and a rich dynamic tone.
The leadpipe is where the tubing tapers from the small hole in the mouthpiece to the wider bore of the trumpet. This part of the trumpet is very important in controlling the overall response and tuning of the instrument. As the trumpet is played, the metal tubing changes from cold to warm causing moisture to condense inside the trumpet. The water key gives plays a quick, convenient way to empty moisture from their trumpet.
The trumpet is made of metal and changes in temperature will affect the pitch. The main tuning slide is used to adjust the overall pitch of the instrument to match the pitch of others in an ensemble.
