The flute may be one of the oldest wind instruments in the world–appearing in many different forms and made from many different materials, from mammoth tusks to swan bones–and dates back 35,000 years or more. The instrument is featured prominently in many classical works throughout many different eras. It has a very soft, warm and expressive sound that has been used effectively as a solo instrument in popular music as well. Despite its soft sound, the flute has also been spotlighted in jazz and even rock music from time to time.
