As amazing as it seems, the YSP-1 can actually deliver 5.1 channels of sound that surround listeners the same way that sound from front, center and surround speakers does.
All 5.1-channels are given separate orientations. Sound is beamed off the walls to create the effect of a surround system with effect speakers.
Although it is only one component, there are actually 42 speaker drivers inside that project precisely focused beams of sound aimed for optimum surround sound effect.
Flat panel plasma and other types of monitors are becoming very popular, but many people wish they could also have thin speakers, rather than the usual boxes to the front and sides. The YSP-1 has a long, slim profile and matches the styling of thin monitors.
Connecting the YSP-1 is much simpler than with conventional home theater systems, because multiple speaker cables are not necessary. Placement is flexible — the component can be positioned over or under the display in the front-center of the room, or in either of the front corners. It is compact enough that space should not be a problem. It can also be mounted on a wall.
As a home theater sound system, the YSP-1 will generally be used for movies on DVD, but it also brings greater enjoyment to digital audio, satellite TV, cable TV, and other multichannel sources.
Four different beam modes can be selected via the remote control. Five Beam mode provides true multichannel surround sound. Stereo mode reproduces the effect of a two-speaker system. Stereo + Three Beam mode and Three Beam mode surround effects are also available. The YSP-1 can even be placed in a corner.

Digital Sound Projection Technology
The YSP-1 applies sophisticated Digital Sound Projection Technology to precisely control the orientation of the sound by focusing it into beams. The sound is both direct and reflected off the walls so the listener hears sound from the front, sides and back. The result is true 5.1-channel surround sound that sounds just like a multi-speaker system — without the need for extra speakers! With 42 digital amplifiers driving 40 1-3/8” (4cm) full-range drivers and two 4-3/8” (11cm) woofers, the Digital Sound Projector delivers 120W of total power with dynamic bass response.
Multiple channels (two channels in the figure) are superimposed to create the sound. In a 5.1-channel configuration, the beam speakers together create the sound of 5.1 superimposed channels.
YSP-1 Rear Panel
The YSP-1 rear panel offers 2 optical/1 coaxial digital and 2 analog inputs, subwoofer output, and RS-232C interface.
