High Sound Quality

Digital ToP-ART
Digital ToP-ART (Total Purity Audio Reproduction Technology) is the name Yamaha has given to a design philosophy whose goal is to maximize digital quality while minimizing analog circuitry. The culmination of Yamaha’s long experience in digital engineering and design, DIGITAL TOP ARTit brings together several key elements to create the best-sounding, A/V components available on the market.

High Current Amplification
Although power rating is often the first thing customers look at in a receiver, high power output does not necessarily mean good sound. High current level is a much more important factor. Yamaha receivers has always had fairly high current levels, but with the Yamaha amplifier / receivers, we have further improved this performance. In brief, Yamaha High Current Amplification achieves low impedance, high current power from input (power supply circuit) to output (speaker terminals). This drives the speakers much more smoothly and dynamically, for better sound from all sources, including 2-channel audio.

Pure Direct
Pure Direct is a special listening mode that causes the signal to bypass all but the most basic audio circuitry, and even turns off the display to prevent any chance of noise interference. It provides the purest possible high-fidelity sound from all sources including USB and HDMI inputs.
Digital ToP-ART Design

Pure Direct delivers two-channel audio sources such as CD and multi-channel audio sources including Super Audio CD and DVDAudio at levels of sound quality that will satisfy even the most dedicated music lovers.

Direct Stereo
Direct Stereo causes the input stereo signal to bypass the DSP circuitry so the pure signal is output without any processing or data loss whatsoever.

Straight and 2-Channel Stereo
Yamaha amplifiers / receivers also offer two other special operation modes for higher quality. Straight outputs the original analog or digital signal without any post-processing. 2-Channel Stereo processes the multichannel signal and outputs it via two channels, for use with a two-speaker system.

192kHz/24-Bit DACs for All Channels
Yamaha amplifiers / receivers use extremely high performance 192kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog converters for all 10 channels. They perform accurate sound field reproduction for high quality multi-channel sources, and for two-channel stereo, provide outstanding separation and precise musical delineation. They deliver superior low level linearity with excellent full-scale performance under varying operation conditions.

Low Jitter PLL Circuitry
Switching the PLL loop filter (transmission coefficient) stabilizes the clock produced from the digital input to reduce clock jitter, thereby improving sound quality. image Lower clock jitter improves the sound orientation and sound field representation.

Accurate Touch Volume Control
No one expects more from a volume control than up and down — except Yamaha. We decided that controlling the volume could be made both easier and more accurate, and the result is the Accurate Touch Volume Control. It lets you make delicate adjustments within a narrow range, yet enables you to move to very high or low levels more quickly. Its extreme accuracy, with negative gang error of less than 0.5dB, due to a high-signal-resolution analog design in conjunction with an ultra-precise digital control circuit (Yamaha original YAC-520 and YAC-523 LSIs) for all channels. The wide control range extends from –80dB to +16.5dB, with narrow 0.5dB steps throughout the entire range for delicate control, even at low volumes.

High Dynamic Power Capability
These amplifiers / receivers are capable of delivering large amounts of reserve power for accurate reproduction of the high energy peaks that are especially prevalent in digital audio sources. This emphasizes the music’s dynamic qualities and provides a sharper sound image.

Linear Damping
Level variations due to high amp impedance tend to reduce an amplifier’s damping factor, and frequency variations cause it to fluctuate. This circuit cancels the effect of these variations, maintaining a high, stable damping factor, for superior articulation of all sounds and better frequency response.

Wide-Range Frequency Response for DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD
With an extremely wide frequency range of 10Hz to 100kHz, these receiver are capable of delivering the full potential of the new digital audio sources DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD.

Anti-Resonance ToP-ART Base
Supporting the heavy heat sinks, transformer, and circuit board is Yamaha’s ToP-ART base, which has exceptional anti-resonance and damping characteristics. Beneath this base is the bottom of the power amplifier, part of the heavy chassis which is also designed for maximum vibration damping.

Anti-Resonance Alumite-Finish Heat Sinks
The large, anti-resonance, aluminum-extruded and black anodized heat sinks have an alumite finish and are located on the base frame with the power amplifier circuit boards to prevent interference with the preamplifier and digital processing sections. The power block is equipped with a fan, but it is only used for extreme heat build-up and is not activated during normal operation, preventing the occurrence of even the slightest unwanted noise.

Detachable Power Cable
The Detachable Power Cable is separate, rather than attached to the unit. It is a thicker type than usual, for higher power handling capacity.

Finest Parts Used Throughout
In order to realize the goals of massive power and superlative sound quality, Yamaha technicians completely re-evaluated all the parts used in previous receivers. As a result, many were replaced with more expensive or custom-designed units.

Compressed Music Enhancer
Compressed music ENHANCEREnjoy much better sound from all your music sources. Yamaha technology reproduces the subtle nuances of the original sound for greater listening pleasure.

When you listen to music in a digitally compressed format such as MP3 stored on portable audio players through loudspeakers for a big sound, the music can’t be enjoyed as fully as with HiFi sound. Yamaha’s Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing with advanced algorithms to enable playback that reproduces the nuances and musical qualities of the original sound.

The Compressed Music Enhancer is an exclusive Yamaha technology that uses advanced DSP technology to compensate for the musical elements that are lost through compression to reproduce the lost nuance and pleasure of music.

Yamaha’s philosophy of improving sound quality begins with the question, “What is the ideal music that we want to achieve by improving compressed music quality?” We put “the sheer pleasure of hearing music” above everything else. We want to go beyond simply simulating the original sound to achieve a powerful sound experience that you will truly enjoy.

We do this by drawing on our 20 years of DSP experience, the creation of the most advanced LSIs and the deep understanding of sound and music that we have accumulated through musical instrument manufacturing, acoustic design, and our relationships with artists all over the world. We use our experience and technology to provide the pleasure derived from music.

MP3, AAC and other music formats that use digital compression cut out music data in the high and low frequency ranges and eliminate small sounds during high volume segments in order to decrease the size of the data. The fact that data is missing is difficult to hear with portable players, but when listening through speakers it is clearly apparent that part of the musical nuance is lost. When you listen to this music, you will be dissatisfied with the inadequate lustrousness of the high range, and with the thin response in the mid-low range.

The Compressed Music Enhancer is a new function that is intended mainly to create harmonics from the remaining music data utilized by DSP, focusing on the fact that the music elements that are lost when the original music is digitally compressed are mainly the harmonics. It combines High Frequency Expansion Processing with Low Frequency Emphasis Processing that emphasizes the bass by creating a super-low range component. These processes vividly revive the range, presence, force and dynamism of compressed music.

The Compressed Music Enhancer is also suited for FM broadcasts and for compressed digital broadcasts where the high range elements have been lost. Music nowadays includes much music premised on its compression and net distribution, and there are cases where its effects are difficult to understand.

Compressed Music Enhancer Block Diagram
Harmonics are slightly added in all bands. Specifically, n harmonics are added to the high range and 1/n harmonics to the low range. The added elements undergo dynamic range compression and are synthesized. During synthesis, the listening perception is aligned. Just before output, the high and low ranges are slightly enhanced by high and low shelving filters.

We recommend using the Compressed Music Enhancer function when listening to songs with a groove feeling and lively music such as Rock, Soul, Disco and R&B. It will of course greatly improve the high parts, but also the depth of the drums and the driving feel of the bass.
