Tips on caring for piccolos and flutes

Part names: piccolo, flute

Instrument assembly

In order to prevent dust and dirt from adhering to the piccolo, cork grease is not applied to the joints before shipping. Be sure to apply cork grease to the joints before assembling it. Use just a small amount of cork grease.
It is also important to re-apply grease as needed to prevent the joints from tightening up.

Care after playing

Drying the body

Pass one end of a polishing gauze cloth through the hole at the tip of the cleaning rod.
Wrap the cloth around the cleaning rod so that the metal tip of the rod is not exposed.
Dry the body by slowly turning the rod in the direction in which the cloth is wrapped.

Drying the pads

After playing, if the pads are wet, stick a piece of cleaning paper between each pad and the opposing tone hole. Fully dry the pad with the paper.
If the pads are sticky after they have been dried, perform the same procedure using powder paper.

Cleaning the surface

Using a polishing cloth, wipe the length of the body, taking care not to apply stress to the keys.

Weekly care

Cleaning small spaces

Use a tone hole cleaner to clean small spaces such as the undersides of keys.

Monthly care

Key check

Screws may loosen naturally. Therefore, keys should be checked once a month. Tighten them if necessary.

Oiling the keys

Add a small amount of key oil at the spots where the keys move. Be careful not to add too much oil. When you are finished, move the keys so that the oil works in thoroughly. If oil ends up on the front sides of the keys, wipe thoroughly to remove it.

Adjustment of cork

You will not be able to obtain proper tones if the cork in the headjoint is out of position. Use the cleaning rod to make sure the position is correct. Insert the cleaning rod through the headjoint, then check whether the mark on the cleaning rod line is aligned with the center of the embouchure hole.

If the cork is out of position

If the cork has shifted to the right
Loosen the head cap, then push the cork to the left and tighten the head cap.
* Put gauze cloth on the tip of the cleaning rod and be careful not to scratch the surface of the cork.
If the cork has shifted to the left
Loosen the head cap, then push the cork to the right and tighten the head cap.
